In Situ Combustion of Heavy Oil within a Vuggy Carbonate Reservoir: Part I—Feasibility Study

Worldwide, the known recoverable heavy oil and bitumen reserves make up more than 64% of total reserves, which 60% are trapped in carbonates. Air injection has immense potential for hydrocarbon recovery from various reservoirs. While most successful air-based techniques performed within carbonate reservoirs containing light oil, theoretically, situ combustion (ISC) also shown great recovering bitumen. Carbonates complex terms geology often associated with fractures vugs that affect fluid flow, pressure propagation progression ISC reactions. This paper describes first experiment triple-porosity concept was applied to simulate heterogeneity through artificially induced vugs, core matrix fractures. approach used study feasibility technique (14° API) a dolomite reservoir using tube (CT) an at 1740 psig. The front advanced 78% length prior termination air injection, producing 80% initial oil. To differentiate between sources CO2 gas (a product decomposition vs. reaction) atomic ratios (CO2 + CO)/CO = 6 CO)/N2 0.21 were applied. Additionally, partial upgrading produced observed.
